APE - Adaptation to premises and equipment
If an employer needs to make adjustments to any equipment a disabled person has to use as part of their job, or if changes need ot be made to the building in any way, the Access to Work grant is for ‘adaptation to premises and equipment’.
Additionality
This refers to the test of whether the equipment or support you’ve identified is something you need because of your impairment. Access to Work can only meet the costs of employing someone which are additional because of their impairment.
Appraisal of need
This is the process in which an Access to Work advisor judges whether a disabled person does need extra support to do their job and, if so, what solutions might be appropriate
Business Centres
Access to Work Business Centres are where advisors are based. They should be your first point of contact in the process to apply for Access to Work.
Cost-sharing
An employer will be asked to fund some of the support in the case of all Access to Work grants except Communication Support at Interview, Travel to Work and Support Workers, if the person applying has been in the job for more than 6 weeks.
CSI - Communication support at interview
A disabled person with communication-related impairments ,who is offered a job interview can apply for Access to Work to fund their communication support needs at interview.
MISC - Miscellaneous support
This usually refers to one-off items which a disabled person needs.
SAE - Special aids and equipment
This refers to any equipment a disabled person needs to enable them to do their job.
SW - Support workers
A support worker may be, for example, a reader or a Personal Assistant, someone a disabled person needs to support them, because of their impairment, in order that they can do the job
TTW - Travel to work
This is the Access to Work funding that can pay for the extra costs a disabled person incurs travelling to work because of their impairment
Viability
The disabled person must earn a living from the work they are doing or applying to do.
If the disabled person is self-employed, their business must be a reliable source of income for that person.
