Funding in further educationIf you are under 19, or on a means tested state benefit then you should not have to pay any fees to study at further education level. If you have access needs, and want to study at further education level you cannot get Disabled Students Allowance. Colleges are given central funding to meet the needs of disabled students so you have to apply directly to them. They will have an Access Fund (sometimes called a Hardship Fund) that you can apply to. If you need extra support with transport, because you are a disabled person, there is no legal right to additional support, but some local authorities offer it, if you are under 21 or 25 (in some areas). You can find out what your local authorities transport policy is by putting your local authority’s name into this search page. This will take you out of the artist’s resource site and straight to the transport support page. (www.dfes.gov.uk/financialhelp/16-19transport/index.cfm? fuseaction=regional.form&CategoryID=12) If you are under 19, you might also qualify for the Education Maintenance Allowance which is a £30 a week allowance, plus a £100 annual bonus if you complete your studies. This will take you out of the artist’s resource site and straight to the Education Maintenance Allowance page. (www.dfes.gov.uk/ema). You can find out more from Skill’s information sheet Funding for Disabled Students in Further Education. You can get to the information sheets by following this link. This will take you out of the artist’s resource site and straight to the Skill site and their list of information sheets (www.skill.org.uk/info/infosheets.asp) If you want to talk to someone directly, they have a freephone helpline that is run twice a week: Phone them on freephone 0800 328 5050, or on 020 7657 2337 (this is not a freephone number) or textphone 0800 068 2422. You can email advisers on info@skill.org.uk.
