Disability Arts ConsultantMost people become consultants when they have gained experience working in a range of other situations. Consultants work with organisations for a short time helping them look at a particular issue or situation, making recommendations for change. There are a number of disability arts consultants working in the UK helping arts organisations improve their programming and developing audience development programmes. Some disabled artists work as consultants in one art form, and some work on general issues such as fundraising or training. Of course, you can just work as a consultant – your work doesn’t have to be about disability! There is a national website for arts consultants which also provides information for organisations wanting to use consultants (this is very useful if you are going to go into this field – you can find out more about what organisations want and need from consultants here). This will take you out of the artist’s resource site and to the arts consultant site (www.arts-consultants.org.uk). Many consultancies in the arts are advertised in Arts Professional or Arts Jobs. Arts Professional is a monthly magazine and e-zine focusing on arts management. This link will take you out of the artist’s resource site and to the Arts Professional site (www.artsprofessional.co.uk). Arts Jobs is a regular e-bulletin or listing of jobs in the arts sector managed by Arts Council England. This link will take you out of the artist’s resource site and to the Arts Council England site at the page where you can join the Arts Job e-group (www.artscouncil.org.uk/pressnews/mailinglists.php).
