Applying for higher educationMost people who want to study at this level spend over a year planning and preparing. You do not apply directly to the college or university. Instead you apply through UCAS (the University and Colleges Admissions System). You can apply for up to 6 different places at the same time. Before you choose where to apply to, you should:
The application form can be filled in online or on paper and will cost you between £5 and £15 depending on how many places you apply to. You will need to make a personal statement on your application form – about you, your interests and why you want to study that subject. You will also need to have a referee who will need to look over your application and approve it. You may then be invited to interviews and/or open days at universities and colleges. This will give you another chance to check out if you feel they are right for you as well as for them to check out if they think you will fit in well. You will then get either
If you get an offer, then you contact your local educational authority to sort out funding and loans, you also should apply now for the Disabled Students Allowance. You may need a needs assessment at this point so they can work out how best to meet your needs. If you do not get offers, you may need to re-approach different colleges or universities, or go through UCAS Extra, or Clearing. UCAS Extra gives you that chance to apply to more places. Clearing happens at the end of the summer when people know their exam results. The colleges and universities that have spaces let UCAS know and they try and match these to the students that have not yet got a place. If you still have no offers you need to think again about what you want to do. You might want to retake some exams or think about a different route to get into the career that you want.
