You will need to find out what access will be provided at the places you wish to study. Since education was included in the Disability Discrimination Act, all colleges and universities have to publish their Disability Statements.
Disability Statements have to be produced each year explaining what the college or university does to support Deaf and disabled students. They should include details of:
- their overall policy towards disabled people
- named contact points for information and support
- points of contact on specific matters, for example admission
- access provided at their educational facilities and details of the support they offer
- how to complain
- examination
- arrangements;
- physical access; and fee remission arrangements (if you can get a reduction on your fees)
Skill have information on access at many UK colleges and Universities at both higher education and further education levels.
Skill also have two information sheets which can help – one on disclosing disability, and one on the needs of disabled students which can help you find out what kinds of support you might want to ask for. This will take you out of the artist’s resource site and straight to the Skill site and their list of information sheets (www.skill.org.uk/info/infosheets.asp)
