Has everyone who works in the arts has had arts training? No, it’s not the only way into the arts. But it is one way in – and one that a lot of people find really valuable. You might want:

• To know more about your artform – it history, its development, what other artists are doing,
• An opportunity to experiment and find out more about your own practice
• A chance to make contacts and get to know people and places that will be important to you in the future

Don’t think about training as being something you just do at the beginning of your career. Many artists choose to study at different points in their lives. It’s a way of keeping up to date, of finding out more about what you do and why you do it and stretching yourself. In the past, Deaf and disabled artists have found it hard to access arts training. This is changing as more and more of the organisations that provide training take their responsibilities under the Disability Discrimination Act seriously.
